Abstract
The vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) is an integral membrane protein that acts to transport neurotransmitters including dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and histamine from cellular cytosol into synaptic vesicles. In the central nervous system, VMAT2 is the only transporter that moves cytoplasmic dopamine into synaptic vesicles. Preventing the oxidation of dopamine may be a strategy for treating Parkinson¡¯s disease. In this study, we report that hypoxia potentially increased the expression of VMAT2 in SH-SH5Y human neuroblastoma cells. In SH-SY5Y cells, hypoxia-inducible factor-1¥á was stabilized by exposure to hypoxia with the same patterns in various solid tumor cells. Taken together, these results demonstrated that VMAT2 can be regulated by hypoxic stress in human neuroblastoma cells.
